Why is Big Brother popular right now?

Big Brother is a reality TV show where several people are locked in a house for several months competing for a monetary reward. The UK's 10th season began in May and airs almost each night, while the US's 11th season debuted on July 9th and airs every Sun., Tues., and Thur. (live eviction). On August 15, 2009, US housemate Chima Simone was removed from the house by producers for repeated violations of rules.
Big Brother is originally a novel by Georges Orwell about crowd controlling, and often cited when freedom is injured, so this trend can have several meanings.
